Maine Open Farm Day - July 23, 2006
O
n Sunday, July 23, 2006, over 95 farms throughout Maine will open to the public. Visit a farm and see what farm life is all about. Watch farm activities and demonstrations from milking to felting; pet farm animals, pick berries, tour a garden or go on a hay ride. There will be farm-raised products for sale, displays to see and samples to taste. Click here for a list of participating farms grouped by county.
Wolf Pine Farm, where I am a CSA shareholder (pictured), is one of the participants this year, and in addition to tours and produce for sale they will be hosting a Local Foods Breakfast in the barn from 8 - 10 am. The à la carte menu will be: homefries with WPF veggies & herbs, "green" scrambled eggs with WPF chard, pancakes made from Maine-grown grains served with local maple syrup (some of which came from the trees at Wolf Pine Farm), and bacon from Diversity Farm (a family-owned grass based farm featuring grass-fed, certified organic eggs, whole chicken, turkey and pork, in nearby Troy, Maine). If you know you are attending the breakfast, email the farm to let them know so they can plan for enough food. Farm tours will head out approximately every hour from 10:30am until 3:30pm, and you can shop at the farm store from 8am - 5pm (items include: veggies from Wolf Pine Farm and organic products from other local farms such as cheese, eggs, bacon, fresh and frozen chicken, pork, lamb, ice cream).
Join me Sunday to support Maine's independent local farmers!

I am just perishing with envy. I want to go to the farms!

What a wonderful idea. I wish they'd do something like that here in Ontario. We have such wonderful local produce, it would be great to visit the farms themselves.
